Inpatients with learning disabilities in specialist hospitals

Welsh Government and NHS Wales have published a report about the number of Welsh residents with learning disabilities in specialist learning disability or mental health hospital settings in Wales and England.

The information reveals that 129 people with learning disabilities remain trapped in specialist units across Wales and England.

Worse still, admissions are outpacing discharges. More people are entering these institutions than leaving them.

This it what our Chief Executive Joe Powell said:

“Behind every number is a person cut off from their family, community, and independence due to a severe lack of local social care and housing.

As participants in the vital work already completed under the Learning Disability Ministerial Advisory Group, we welcome this step forward in data transparency. While formal advisory structures for the new term of government are still to be confirmed, these figures together with January’s From Hospitals to Homes report prove why co-production and expert advisory input must continue.

The data reinforces a stark reality: we urgently need the right resources and funding to get people with learning disabilities out of hospitals when they do not need to be there”.
