I’m a lot better now – I had a nasty scare last week and had to go to A&E because I had an allergic reaction to penicillin. I didn’t know I was allergic until it happened. I’m on different antibiotics for a kidney infection now and I’ve ordered a special band to wear on my wrist to warn people I’m allergic. I felt so ill, it was awful.
I’m really enjoying Gerraint’s Nightclub at the moment. I’m hoping to come to Adfest next year too. It’s been a couple of years now since I won an award for my hard work with Conwy Connect.
Talking of Conwy Connect, I’m very busy as one of the Health Check champions. It’s our 5-year anniversary this year. I’ve been with them since the start. We promote annual health checks for people with a learning disability through workshops, training etc. We’ve had to recruit more champions as the project is so successful. We also do parent and carer workshops and hospital training. We have 10 top tips for health staff (e.g. reminding them that people with a learning disability might get as stressed as anyone else or feel nervous). We put the top tips onto a pen and we give the pens out to healthcare professionals. We wrote the tips ourselves
I’ve got big news! I got engaged a few weeks ago to Dom. We met at the Mencap Gateway Club back in January. We’re living together in his place at the moment. I only go back to my flat when I need to pick something up or when I have an appointment. I much prefer it here. I used to have a support worker when I lived in Llanfairfechan, but I’m managing just fine without one now. This feels great and we plan to marry in November 2027
Living together has been easy so far – we do lots of things together and we also go on adventures. We’re really busy and we support each other. If I need anything I have my family and we keep in constant touch. I do miss my dad very much. He died in 2023 and we were very close. Every day I feel like I want to ring him.
Mencap celebrates 80 years this year and I’ve been fundraising for them by doing a walking challenge. I’ve already reached my target.
In April I turned 40 – time seems to whizz past! We’re celebrating 7 months of being together by going to Wetherspoons for a late lunch today. There’s karaoke tonight so we’re going to that.
I’m hosting my weekly social on Insight App and I also join some of the online events at All4Inclusion. Dom and I are meeting up with a couple of people from that community when they come for a day trip to Llandudno this month. We’re looking forward to meeting them face to face!
