Joe’s Soapbox – Welsh Government Elections

author icon author icon 20/04/2026 author icon Joe's SoapboxNews

On 7 May 2026, people in Wales will vote in an election.

This is when we choose who will run the Welsh Government.

How voting will change

This election will be different.

Before, you voted for one person in your local area.

Now, you will vote for a political party.

Each area is called a constituency and will have 6 Members of the Senedd (MSs) instead of 1 MS.

This is because of a new system called Proportional Representation.

This system makes sure the number of MSs better reflects how people vote.

In the past, only one person could win in each area.
This meant many votes were not counted towards representation.

More Members of the Senedd

The Senedd will increase from 60 members to 96 members.

There will be many new MSs for us to get to know.

Some well-known MSs, like Jane Hutt and Mark Isherwood, have retired.

They were strong supporters of disabled people.

We now need new champions to stand up for our rights.

What happens next?

We do not yet know what the next Welsh Government will prioritise for disabled people.

All Wales People First has been working with the Welsh Government on:

  • The Learning Disability Strategy for Wales
  • The Disabled People’s Action Plan

This work was done together with disabled people in co-production.

The next Welsh Government will decide whether to continue this work.

Why your vote matters

This is an important time for disabled people in Wales.

If we vote, we can help shape the future.

If politicians know we vote, they are more likely to listen to us.

Your choice

I cannot tell you who to vote for.

Voting is your personal choice.

It is a good idea to read party manifestos.

This will help you decide which party is best for you and your life.

A list of manifestos is available on our website here https://allwalespeople1st.co.uk/project/senedd-election-2026/

Please vote on 7 May 2026

Together, we can build a better Wales for disabled people.

Victory for self-advocacy!
