I’m a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament; this is the youth version of the Welsh Assembly. I was chosen by Learning Disability Wales to represent young people with a learning disability in Wales.
I am on the Transport committee, and we discuss the difficulties that people are having in some parts of Wales with public transport. For example, bus services can be sporadic – especially in rural areas where the roads are narrow and buses can’t get down them. It can be very isolating for people.
Being a member of the Youth Parliament means going to the Senedd once a year and speaking in front of the members of the Senedd. We stay over for the weekend and speak in the Chamber as well as taking part in workshops etc. We also meet regularly outside these times with each other.
I also recently started work with CC4LD as a Health check Champion. This involves encouraging people with a learning disability to take up the chance of an annual health check. People with a learning disability are entitled by law to have an annual health check but lots of GP surgeries don’t call them regularly. We support people to ask for their health check through workshops and attending events.
CC4LD has helped me a lot since I joined them and once I joined a self-advocacy group I felt people understood me better. It’s really important that people with learning disabilities are understood, acknowledged and recognised in society.
Every single week is busy for me! I’m starting college in September to do Data Web Design and Media – it’s a mainstream course and I think I’m going to be the only person with a learning disability on the course. I will get some one-to-one support.
I did my Gold and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2020 and I am a Queen’s Guide Award holder and High Sheriff Award winner
