This is my first contribution to the Member Stories.

My name is Andrew and I live in Cwmavon which is near Port Talbot.

I live on my own in a flat and have support workers who come in every day except Sundays.  I have gone from being in 24 hour supported living to living independently with 12 hours of support a week and it’s great.

I had a social worker who really believed in me.  I told her I wanted to live more independently, and she knew I could, so she helped me.  We worked hard to prove that I would be able to cope on my own.  I’ve been here six years now.

I know that when I was in 24 hour supported accommodation that the staff cared about me, but I had to be home by a certain time in the evenings and that was very restricting.

Now I can come and go in my own flat as I please.  It’s better living on my own.

I fill my day easily with chores, going out for a walk, watching the TV. I’m a big Liverpool fan and Wrestling fan.

The neighbourhood is nice and caring and I really like it here.

I have lost both my parents, my sister, brother in law and my niece so that really affected my mental health. I’m a Born Again Christian and the Pastor comes to my house with others for a ‘church in house’ service on Sundays.  I also go to other people’s houses for the services too.  It’s a lovely community and I’ve been a Born Again Christian since 2017.

I’ve been a member of Your Voice Advocacy and have also joined Your Scene – I’m waiting for a place so that I can go to their discos – you have to wait until there’s a space because a taxi picks you up and drops you home again.  In the meantime, I go to Gerraint’s Nightclub – I went last night for the 70s theme night.
